Breakfast With Jesus

Then as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread… Jesus said to them, ‘Come and eat breakfast’… Jesus then came and took bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish” (John 21:9-13).

Can you imagine being able to eat breakfast with Jesus? Can you imagine Him preparing the food and serving it to you? About what would you talk? What would He say to you?

Here are some details about this breakfast in John 21. The place was the Sea of Tiberias in Galilee. The people were seven disciples – Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee (James and John), and two other disciples (cf. John 21:1-3). The time was post-resurrection, more than a week after the resurrection, more than a week after the resurrection. This was the third time Jesus had appeared to these disciples while they were in a group (John 20:19; 20:26; 21:14).

The conversation with Peter was significant. You will recall that Peter had earlier denied Jesus three times (John 18:15-18, 25, 26-27). A fire of coals burned as Peter denied Jesus (John 18:25). At breakfast by the sea there was a fire of coals (John 21:9). Jesus asked Peter three times “Do you love Me?” (John 21:15, 16, 17). It grieved Peter that Jesus asked the third time (John 21:17). It no doubt brought back painful memories. However, Jesus gave Peter opportunity to reaffirm his love. Moreover, Jesus told Peter, “Feed My sheep” (John 21:15, 16, 17). Jesus was not done with Peter. Peter would go on to do great things.

Have breakfast with Jesus. Start your day out with feeding on His word. Reaffirm your love to Him. Even if you failed Him yesterday, reaffirm your love. Then, get up and let Him use you. He is not done with you. You can still do great things.
